DNA Repair Help Skin Cancer Treatment

LEEDS - A new DNA discovery may help treatment of patients with skin cancer. The scientists found that DNA repair genes in tumors can reduce the failure of cancer chemotherapy treatments, as quoted by Press Association, on Friday (13/08/2010).

Many anti-cancer drugs work by damaging the DNA of tumor cells. But the DNA of tumor cells can survive and grow again. For the first time that genes involved in DNA repair signified as a marker of response to therapy for patients with skin cancer. The findings were published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

Leaders of the study, Professor Julia Newton-Bishop, from Cancer Research UK Centre, said the report (the so-called bio markers, changes in the tumors themselves, which can predict how patients will respond to treatment.

By knowing who has the most attacked his genes, may help doctors to provide early treatment, including predicting the likelihood of these patients survived. DNA repair system is an advantage in the medical world, but recent research shows that this system also helps cancer therapy.

The study involved 472 patients with melanoma malgnant, form the most dangerous skin cancer.
